I first heard of Peter Max's "Art In Transit" tour from an article I read in Life Magazine, Sept. 5, 1969 issue. Peter's Pop Art designs were sent into orbit around the U.S. as bus posters, taxi cab placards and billboards, and later inspired me to seek out some pieces for my own collection. I ventured into Manhattan and purchased "The Different Drummer" poster from the bluejeans store of the same name on Lexington Avenue between 61st and 62nd Street, and paid approximately $2.00 for the print. The poster is dated 1968.
I had it framed without glass and it has been that way for many years until 2003, when Peter autographed it for me at the Huntington Barnes&Noble. He also signed two of his books, "The Art of Peter Max" and "Teen Cuisine," (which he illustrated for Abby Gail Kirsch. She also signed it for me some years ago). I collected a few other items including some silk frabric pieces (a "mod" Peter Max flower tie and a colorful scarf which I bought in Toronto). I recently found some more Peter Max items through eBay, and I then decided to have everything professionally stretched and framed with UV-protective glass by Island Art & Framing in Melville, NY.
As you can see as pictured below, Peter Max's pop art is bright, cheery, and reflects the stylized faces, floral patterns and astral/zodiac figures of the 60's and 70's. It was a time when we were thinking about transit. . . cars, trains, planes and outer space. Peter Max illustrated man in flight and the cosmos in a heavenly way. His art has also brought peace, love and happiness to my bed, bath and kitchen, here on Earth!
